Fujinon lenses are famous for their high quality build and their ability to produce clean, sharp images. Used in various industries, including broadcast, satellite and mobile technologies, these award-winning lenses lead the way for the highest of image quality.

When it comes to choosing a Fujinon lens for your new X-Series camera what one should you buy, and more importantly what photographic scenario is each lens best suited for?

The below guide is a real world explanation on what lens you would use for taking a particular type of photograph.

Before going into the lenses let’s explore what a focal length and aperture are.

What's a focal length?

A focal length is the calculated distance from the camera’s sensor to the centre of the lens. You can see what focal length a lens is by the measurement displayed in millimetres on the actual lens (normally located on the front of the lens).

When talking about Fujinon lenses on a Fujifilm APS-C sensor a wider angled view consists of a smaller number like 18mm (27mm equivalent on a full frame sensor), whereas a larger number like 200mm (300mm equivalent on a full frame sensor) represents a more zoomed in view commonly referred to as telephoto.

What's an f-stop or aperture?

Have you ever seen those strange looking numbers on the front of your lens and wondered what they represent?

The numbers are actually fractions of light, as they increase in ‘stops’ they double in value.

An f-stop simply put represents the opening size of the lens (aperture). The higher the f-stop means less light will pass through the lens. So it’s true to say f/22 will let less light through the lens than f/1.2.

A few other facts about f-stops:

- Typically a lens, which has a larger f-stop (for example f1.2) will be more expensive.

- Primes lenses will have a fixed aperture.

- Using a larger f-stop like f/2.8 will produce a greater depth of field, meaning you will have the subject in focus and the background will be blurred.

Did you know?

-       XF lenses feature a metal rear mount.

-       Most XF lenses will contain a manual aperture ring.

-       Nearly all of the XF lenses are made in Japan. Here's a quick video showing their production.

XF Prime Lenses

Firstly what is a prime lens?

- A prime lens is a fixed focal length, meaning you will be unable to zoom in and out.

- Most prime lenses will have a minimum f-stop value of f2.8 or below.

- These lenses are typically best used for producing a sharper result.

Based on my own photography experience, here's a quick table view of the current line up of Fujinon XF lenses showing what type of photography is best suited for each lens. Don't get me wrong, you can certainly use any of the XF lenses to photograph anything, however this is just my opinion.

The final element of the lens is positioned as close to the camera’s sensor as possible, making the incidence angle of light reaching the sensor smaller. This in turn reduces vignetting and colour shading, while helping to keep the lens’s overall size small.
